Auto Handheld Tracking Devices

Posted by on September 10, 2009

GPS rental

There are many different types of auto navigation systems. Among the many you will find those that come factory installed, those that are attached to the interior of your automobile through the use of suction cups, and still others that are handheld devices which can simply be installed by attaching a cord to your cars cigarette lighter. These devices don’t offer quite the functionality and ease of use as some of the other (need I say pricier) types of navigational devices but you should not be fooled by features that you might not find all that useful in reality.

Being a bargain hunter is what I do. There really is nothing I can do to change my thrifty (some might say cheap) nature. Having the best “toys” are great, but would prefer to purchase them without spending too much. For this reason alone I decided to seriously consider some of the many handheld navigational tools on the market today.

There are a list of reasons why I consider these systems attractive. First of all, they suit many purposes. Not only are they useful when traveling by car (if you purchase the right software of course), they are also quite useful when taking your travels off road as well. You can use them four wheeling in the country, riding horses in wide open spaces, hiking in the hills and mountains, or when getting away by bike for the day. My personal favorite use for these nifty tools however is on the side roads. I’m a horrible navigator and a mapping GPS vehicle tracking system handheld is just the thing to keep me on track and on target.

I don’t know about you, but I hate feeling as though I am completely and utterly lost. It is a frightening feeling that is only intensified whenever there are children on board during those lost moments in time. Only someone who has ever experienced that feeling while looking into the eyes of her babies and feeling so alone on top of being so lost can really understand. There simply aren’t adequate words to describe the deep down inside fear that can take hold in situations such as this if allowed.

The best action to take is proactive. Avoid putting yourself in situations where you will feel lost. This of course, hasn’t always been possible in the past. Having a navigational device on hand at all times can go such a long way towards alleviating that fear and calming any qualms someone may have about the need to travel to unfamiliar places at time. Since there are those few times when we do become lost, it’s best to know that these systems can assist us to find our way back safely.

If you are looking for a great gift to give almost anyone on your Christmas list this year, a nice handheld used GPS for sale with mapping capabilities is a great gift to give. Of course, you do not really need to wait until the holidays in order to give a gift such as this-especially if you are giving it to someone whose safety is of great importance to you. Females who travel alone will see benefit to these devices, wheather be it for driving, hiking, boating, or any other activity.

No matter what your specific needs in auto navigation systems may be, there are many systems that could suit them quite nicely. Take the time to study what is available and reconcile your needs with your budget in order to find the one that will work best for you. Handheld GPS systems with mapping abilities offer a highly affordable option along with some surprising extra features, which will make them attractive in and out of the automobile. Good luck in finding the perfect auto navigation system for you. It’s out there somewhere.

Networking Computers At Home

cheap laptop computers

Have you ever thought about networking your cheap laptop computers at home? If you have a small collection of computers around the house (and a small collection of computer users), you can connect each one of those computers to one another and share data, software, and hardware including a single Internet connection. There are many creative uses for home networking, however it’s an ideal situation when upgrading each computer to the same capability is financially out of the question. On a home network, each computer has access to the equipment of the better machine in the group as if that equipment were their own.

Creating a home network can be accomplished by connecting either an Ethernet cable or Wireless connection. The easiest and cheapest method uses an Ethernet connection, which requires a series of network cards, a cable for each computer, and a router. A network card is used to communicate with every connected computer in the network.

You’ll want to first, select the computers that will connect to each other and then install the network cards inside each of them. Then you’ll connect a cable to each colored laptop computers that will communicate with the server. These cables won’t connect to the server directly. Instead, they’ll connect to the router. To enable Internet access for each computer, this router will need to connect with a modem of the host machine.

You can set up the Windows network on each machine once the hardware is setup correctly. Within Windows, you can set up a home network similar to the way that you set up an Internet connection. Only this time, you’ll set up a LAN (Local Area Network) connection.

Windows should walk you through setting up a LAN after starting the computer and once complete, you can begin to connect one of your machines to the network. You can do this through Internet Explorer by typing in the address and password required to access the router (the address and password required to access the router will be in the router manual).

Connected to the network, each computer can send files back and forth, open programs on a remote computer, play the sound files and videos located on another computer, and share a single Internet account to browse the web, download files, or chat with someone in an entirely different country.  If a single printer is available on only one computer in the network, every connected PC can send documents to it and print them out. Kids will enjoy the ability to play multi-player games and adults will enjoy the ability to blast a single message to everyone at once or maintain a group schedule.

It’s really advisable at this point to install a firewall application to combat worms, viruses and hacking attempts. Firewalls are a preventative measure - they do not repair. The damage can be reversed by anti-virus or anti-spyware applications. Install a firewall granting access to the PC, afterwards install anti-spyware and anti-virus software apps on the remaining computers on the network.

If you have files that shouldn’t be shared (bank statements, credit card information, etc.), you can restrict their access in one of several ways. You can put them in a new folder and then remove the “read” permissions for that folder. Or you can specify who can (and who cannot) access specific files with a password from within Windows Control Panel.

Why Toddlers Need Learning Toys

Posted by on August 8, 2009

Learning new things is a big part of a toddler’s development. This is the reason it’s so important that you give them learning toys to play with. They can help your toddler learn lots of things he’ll need to know to be ready for school in a couple of years.

There are many excellent educational toddler toys available on the market today such as video games, large floor puzzles, and toys that teach colors, numbers, the alphabet, and shapes. But just purchasing a toy for your toddler isn’t sufficient. As well, you need to figure out how to maximize the benefits of these interesting, engaging toys.

How to Learn With Learning Toys

It’s not enough to just give a learning toy to your toddler and assume he’ll figure it out. It’s important that you spend some time playing with the new toy along with your toddler. Show him how it operates and how to use it. Otherwise, your toddler will simply press buttons mindlessly. You get the most benefits from exploring the toy alongside your child.

While you’re playing with your son or daughter, you should keep your little one’s attention span in mind. Therefore, rotate your toddler’s selection of toys occasionally. Show interest in all of the toys. If you show interest in the toy, the toddler will be more likely to show interest in it as well.

Take It Outside

Education doesn’t only happen in the home. There are many wonderful outdoor toys for toddlers as well that can help them learn about the world around them. For example, there are inflatable easels where toddlers can use sidewalk chalk to draw pictures of nature. Riding toys, swimming pools, and outdoor sporting equipment for toddlers can teach them motor skills. Toddlers can learn a lot by playing with learning toys outside.

Educational toys for toddlers are among the best toys you can buy because of the benefits they provide. It’s never too early for your child to begin learning. By giving him appropriate toys, he can develop skills that will be useful when he starts school, and also throughout his life.

Maintaining A Hydroponics Vegetables Greenhouse

Posted by on August 8, 2009

There is one “friendly to the environment” growing method, which is very easy for anyone to learn, and that is hydroponics. Have you ever considered a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse? You can practice hydroponics, even little kids have been taught to in a classroom setting.

Hydroponics Is Really Healthy For The Environment And For Your Family As Well

You can be eco friendly by using the hydroponics method and have the benefit of fresh fruit and vegetable grown without pesticides and herbicides. Lettuce, tomatoes, chilli peppers, bean sprouts are just some of the examples of easy crops to grow.

When you choose a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse, you will be able to enjoy vegetables and fruits all year round.  Imagine having all the fresh herbs you want.  You can have a continuous supply of your favorite herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme, chives, chervil, parsley, sorrel, mint, sage, cilantro and dill and many other herbs.

The Positive Side Of Hydroponics Compared To Regular Field Crops

A couple of advantages that the hydroponics growing method has over conventional field crops is that the roots are always exposed to oxygen, water and nutrients in a controlled environment.  Instead of setting up a sprinkler system or hauling the hose around outside, you can conserve water by growing your plants using the hydroponics growing method.

For a field crop, the quality of its exposure to water will determine how much oxygen the plants are getting.  Not enough water and the plant will dry up from too much air and oxygen while too much water will not let the plant gets the oxygen it needs.  A crop field can compete with a hydroponics plant for growth only if the soil and watering system is excellent.

Air Fertilization for your Greenhouse

There are some special considerations that are involved with a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse and that includes the fact that during the winter, the levels of carbon dioxide can be lower in the middle of the hydroponics vegetables greenhouse and that means those center plants will not grow as much as the others.  You can remedy this through the practice of enriching the greenhouse atmosphere with carbon dioxide, a practice known as air fertilization.

You do not need any gardening experience to enjoy the harvest from a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse. To meet the requirements of the family a hydroponic vegetable greenhouse will provide you with the controlled environment you will need.

Understanding Carbonation

Posted by on August 8, 2009

In the USA, we have flavored carbonated drinks which we call soda pop. The carbonation process is what puts the “fizz” in soda pop. There is a lot of info about carbonation at http://tutorials.carbonatedseltzerwater.com.

It is the amount of dissolved CO2 that produces carbonic acid in drinks, influencing the quality and different tastes of various carbonated drinks, including soda pops and soft drinks.

Carbonation is the process that gives most soft drinks their distinctive taste. That fizzy taste is caused by diluted carbonic acid, not by the bubbles, as many believe.

In home-brewing of beer, over-carbonation can be dangerous; it can result in bottles gushing or even exploding.Using excessive amounts of sugar as a primer is dangerous; the same is true of using wrong types of bottles or improper capping processes. So, I would suggest, just buy your beer at the store.

Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water, is plain water into which CO2 gas has been dissolved, and is the number one ingredient of most “soft drinks” or “soda pop”.

In the past, such drinks could be produced at home by putting water in a seltzer bottle, and then adding CO2. Club soda, often identical to plain carbonated water, may sometimes contain a small amount of salt or trace minerals. Home-made soda pop might taste more salty than normal because of these ingredients. Add some drops of concentrated flavors and what do you have? Soda pop.

If it has enough minerals, the drink is classified as sparkling water. A large assortment of calorie free flavors to flavor sparkling water to great taste is sold at allfreightfree.com. Instead of drinking so much soda pop, this could be a great option for your family.

Carbonated drinks marketed as diet soft drinks offer a calorie-free way to make sure your family drinks plenty of water; after all, we all know that the better drinks taste, the more kids will drink, and the more your kids drink, the healthier it is for your family.

If anyone in your family is athletically active, this flavored drink will also make sure they stay properly hydrated while exercising. This has been an extremely hot summer; two-a-day football practices have already started for college and high school players. Perhaps, football mom, you could provide the team flavored carbonated drinks and make sure everyone drinks the amounts that they need and stays well-hydrated.The kids — and maybe the coach — will love you. This might be a good project for the football booster club to take on.

The summer heat has made drinking water extremely important – in fact, it has made it a dangerous summer even for Texans, who are used to hot summers. But most of us are not accustomed to day after day of 100-degrees-plus temperatures with high humidity; and it is the elderly and infants who are especially vulnerable.

So, flavored carbonated drinks could be a good option for you and your kids, and maybe even for your elderly neighbor. We are our brothers’ keepers, after all.

A Refracting Telescope Can Expand the Universe

Posted by on August 8, 2009

If you have even a basic knowledge of astronomy, you know that there are a number of different types of telescopes used for viewing the cosmos.  If you aren’t familiar with the more popluar telescopes, it is the refracting and reflecting telescopes that are representative of the two basic models of telescopes called on by today’s beginner and professional astronomers.   Of these two telescopes, the refracting telescope has the longest history and has been in use for centuries.   This telescopes origins can be traced back to the 15th century and continues to be a very commonly used telescope in the 21st century.  In fact, the refracting telescope is one of the oldest telescope designs still in use by today’s astronomers.

The Workings of a Refractor Telescope

The refracting telescope, sometimes referred to as a refractor telescope, consists of multiple concave lenses which allow the incoming light to be refracted, resulting in images that are brighter and greater in size.  These qualities give the appearance that the actual images appear much bigger than viewing with the naked eye.   These refractors gather the incoming light and bend it, allowing you to view objects from a distance.  This magnification is what provides you with the ability to clearly view the stars and night sky. Even though refracting telescopes may have a lot of bells and whistles, the truth is that they are basically a series of concave lenses that refract the light.

The Advantages of a Refractor Telescope

This telescope’s design has withstood the test of time, with numerous improvements and enhancements.   Throuhout the years, its design was continuously analyzed, resulting in continuous improvement of its design and magnification abilities.  This was a great advantage, providing astronomers with the a chance to derive the refracting telescope design’s strengths and weaknesses.

This telescope design has been improved dramatically since the fifteenth century.  Even with the improvement of refractor technology, it is the size of the refractor telescope that still appears to be a drawback with this telescope design.  As the need for increased magnification has presented itself, the refractor lens has become larger.  This can result in the potential for defects or sagging.

The truth is that refracting telescopes have proven themselves across the centuries and, to attest to their value, have remained one of the most popular designs among astronomers.  Regardless of the type of telescope you choose to scan the cosmos, the ongoing use and popularity of the refracting telescope provides assurance that it will be with us for decades to come.

Finding a Refracting Telescope

If you are like most budding astronomers, it can be confusing trying to select the best refractor telescope for the money.  But what we found was that visiting telescope and astronomy websites that provide telescope reviews can be very helpful in making your decision.  So, whether you are considering a kids telescope or professional model, be sure to do your research and you will be assured of enjoying many hours of star gazing pleasure.

The Joy of A Garden Pond

Posted by on June 30, 2009

Most of us have enjoyed the beauty of a garden pond at some time or another. A pond can create an exotic landscape that is both relazing and calming. A backyard pond creates its own microclimate within your yard and gives pleasure to your friends and family. However, are you aware that a garden pond can be of benefit to local fauna?

Many species of fauna may enjoy the benefits that your pond will provide depending on where you live. Birds and butterflies, fish and frogs, turtles, bugs and snails will all gain from access to your pond. By attacting the native fauna you will enhance the enjoymnet that your pond gives you.

Humans Love Ponds Too

When you widen the term “local wildlife” to include your friends and family, you’ll see that there are many benefits to making a pond in your garden. Scientific studies have shown that there are benefits to one’s physical wellbeing by practicint relaxation techniques and practicing relaxation techniques, and spending time by a garden pond and listening to the trickle of water is certainly a relaxing experience. When you feel stressed take a stroll to your garden pond and listen to the sound of the water and your mood will lift.

A pond in the backyard can do so much for your life. They can be almost anything you want them to be: an exciting science experiment, a place for relaxation and reflection, a way to educate your children about an ecosystem, or a unique garden feature.

Pond Pets

Backyard ponds can even provide an environment for special pets. Koi make interesting pets that will adapt to life in a back yard pond. Koi are a member of the carp family and can grow up to three feet long. Koi are konw as long living fish so keeping koi should not be considered a casual hobby.

However, if you are prepared for the commitment of caring for koi, they will add to the sense of serentiy provided by your pond. Watching your fish swim and explore their pond is a magical exerience.

Pond Design – Where To Begin

Due to the popularity of ponds, you will find pond kits in most nurseries or garden centers and they’ll include easy instructions on how to make a pond. If you would prefer to have a professional handle the installation, many landscaping firms will be able to help and by grabbing a copy of “How To Make A Pond” you’ll be well equipped to discuss your requirements and have an understanding of pond design.

Exact Science: Cooking

Posted by on June 16, 2009

Cooking may seem easy. After all, your mom does it all the time, several times in a day. But try stirring the sauce in the pan and frying the meat and you will soon find out that there is more to cooking than meets the eye.

Cooking is actually quite hard not because it is an arduous task but because it is an exact science. This means that you cannot just put any ingredients you
want in any amount. In order to arrive at the taste that you want for you dish, you need the exact amount of ingredients, from the number of veggies that you include to the number of times you load the salt. A little more than what you should be putting can be
disastrous to the taste palate. This is especially true with flavorings like salt, sugar, and other
spices.

In cooking process it is good idea to measure the ingredients used in cooking. Without knowing how to measure the ingredients right, you cannot make a perfectly tasting dish, unless of course you have that natural gift and instinct for cooking that you can
just put anything you want and still arrive at an unusually flavorful dish.

Measuring cups are there to help any novice in cooking. And of course, there are the cookbooks, which will tell you the exact amount of each ingredient that you have to put in. Although most veteran cooks swear by on following your own instincts and making your own
measurements, for the first time cooks and the not-so-new in the field, it is first important to
follow the directions to the letter and then as you gain experience, experiment with different tastes. But whether you follow what the cook book says or you
follow your own recipes, you are still in a way measuring ingredients in an exact way.

There are a lot of measuring tools available in the market that will help you in cooking. One of the most important ones and the set that you should not cook without is the set of measuring cups and spoons. These are the staple of recipe books. Without a set of the
cups and the spoon, you will not be able to determine just how much ingredients you should put because often, cookbooks will indicate the number of cups or how many teaspoons.

Another important tool in the kitchen that you should invest in if you are really serious in your cooking career is the weighing scale. This is not the scale that you use to look at your own weight. Rather it is the kilo scale where you often put meat, fish and vegetables to determine how they weigh. These are sometimes also referred to in recipe books. Although not as often used as the measuring cups and spoons, weighing scales are used in professional cooking recipes and also when cooking for large number of people. Sometimes due to unavailability of cups and spoons, it is difficult to measure the ingredients because they are increased as the quantity of food is large.

Cooking, as they say, is not only an art but also a science- an exact science. To make any good food, one need not to have mathematics background but having the precision and understanding the amount of item is necessary.

Different Water Types Judged By What Source It Came From

Posted by on June 15, 2009

Sparkling water is just one of all bottled water types  sometimes referred to as “spring water” but that’s not really accurate. The processing and origin of various types of bottled water really makes them quite different in taste and content. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-the federal agency that regulates all types of bottled water-has established guidelines called standards of identity that classify bottled water into several different water types:

Spring Water: Ah, the ever-popular “spring water” is defined as bottled water derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface of the earth. To qualify as spring water, it must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring. If the collection process uses some type of an external force, the water must be from the same stratum as the spring and must retain the quality and all of the same physical properties of water that flows naturally from a spring to the surface.

Purified Water: This is a type of drinking water that has been treated with processes such as distillation, deionization or reverse osmosis (we’ll get to those terms later). Basically, this just means that the bacteria and dissolved solids have been removed from the water by some process, making it “purified.” This type of bottled water is usually labeled as purified drinking water but can also be labeled for the specific process used to produce it, for example, reverse osmosis drinking water or distilled drinking water. Many bottled water brands are actually purified drinking water.

Mineral Water: Okay, ready for some science? Mineral water contains not less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids and is defined by its constant level and relative proportions of mineral and trace elements at the point of emergence from the source. No minerals can be added to the water.

Sparkling Bottled Water: Yes, the fizzy kind. But what makes it fizzy? This type of water contains the same amount of carbon dioxide that it had when it emerged from its source. Sparkling bottled waters may be labeled as sparkling drinking water, sparkling mineral water, sparkling spring water, etc. A large assortment of calorie free flavors to flavor sparkling water to great taste is sold at http://allfreightfree.com

Artesian Water/Artesian Well Water: Ready for some more science? Artesian water comes from a well that taps a confined aquifer-a water-bearing underground layer of rock or sand-in which the water level is above the top of the aquifer.

Well Water: This one is pretty easy. Well water is exactly what it sounds like- water from a hole made in the ground that taps the water source.

Municipal/Tap Water: Of course, you know it’s the type of water piped right into your home. While tap water isn’t regulated by the FDA (but we thought it should be included here), it must meet the strict standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Municipal tap water is generally of excellent quality, however, many people prefer the taste and enjoy the convenience of bottled water, which, in most cases, undergoes additional processing and often retains the pleasant characteristics of its natural source.

Bottled Water Regulation: The FDA is responsible for the food and pharmaceutical industries, two industries where safety and quality are of paramount importance. Yes, the FDA is full of serious customers. Therefore, bottled water is one of the most extensively regulated packaged-food products. The bottled water industry receives government oversight from federal and state agencies across the country, providing consumers with multiple layers of safety assurance - from the finished water product back to the source. Bottled water is required to be tested for the same parameters as tap water, but the standards are, in some cases, stricter than for tap water. State governments inspect and certify the “sources” of spring water, meaning that samples have been analyzed and found to be of a safe and sanitary quality according to regulation.

Soda Water Made Simple

Posted by on June 14, 2009

Soda Water is carbonate water, sometimes referred to as sparkling water, and is plain ole’ water which carbon dioxide gas has been added. Most “soft drinks” and “pop” include It as the primary ingredient. This process — carbonation — produces carbonic acid, better known as soda pop.

Soda water is also known as club soda; it can be produced at home by using a seltzer bottle filled with water and then “charged” with carbon dioxide. Although it is possible for small amounts of table salts and sodium trace minerals to be present, club soda can be the same as plain carbonated water. Additives like these could make the taste of home made soda water slightly salty. Naturally-carbonated mineral water results from this process in many areas.

Sometimes sparkling mineral water causes a little dental decay. While the potential problem of sparkling water is greater than still water the problem remains low. Regular soft drinks cause tooth decay at a rate much higher than sparkling water. The rate is so surprisingly low, carbonated drinks may not be a factor in causing dental decay.

Water coming from the ground, usually from artesian wells, is often filtered among layers of minerals; these layers contain various carbonates; the water absorbs carbon dioxide gas released by the carbonates. The result? Natural sparkling water. In cases of the water picking up enough different minerals to add a flavor to the water, it becomes sparkling mineral water.

Basically, soda water equals water plus carbon dioxide. Sparkling mineral water is a naturally-occuring product of carbonation. 1794 was the year that a jeweler invented a device to produce an artificial carbonated mineral water.

A taste test of several popular carbonated drinks determined that Perrier (a sparkling natural mineral water) had the longest-lasting fizz.

For consumers who believe seltzer to be a bit harsh, club soda provides a more gentle fizz. As part of the tasting test, club soda seemed to be milder and a little sweeter tasting than standard carbonated water.

Club soda, sparkling mineral water, seltzer, and carbonated water have zero calories, making them a dieter’s choice over soda pop and tonic water. Not even if flavored at home with flavor for carbonated water.

The carbonated drink produced by mixing water, sugar, carbon dioxide and quinine is known as tonic water. Originally, quinine was used as an additive to tonic water to help cure or prevent malaria. Today it is often used as a mixer with gin and lemon or lime for an alcoholic drink.

This is just a few facts and names used for soda water.

A Nautical Bird House is Easy to Build

Posted by on June 13, 2009

There are a myriad of bird houses, something to appeal to every bird lover. Bird enthusiasts like to have bird houses to encourage birds to live on their own house. To get wild birds to make their home, bird lovers will set up birdhouses, put out bird baths, and use bird feeders in order to draw feathered friends. Of all the variations of birdhouses, it appears that the nautical bird house is by far the most popular.

Definition Of A Marine Bird House

Usually, those who are not bird enthusiasts, think a bird house would be a square box with a roof. They think the houses would be made of scraps of lumber and nailed on a crooked fence post. However, bird lovers are aware there is a wide range of possibilities when it comes to picking a bird house and a nautical bird house seems to always be the most popular.

The uninitiated may think a nautical birdhouse is for pelicans or sea gulls. Of course those birds are too big. A nautical bird house is built for song birds. Simply put a nautical bird house is built to resemble a nautical theme. Light houses are what a lot of nautical bird houses look like. Of the huge variety of shapes and sizes of birdhouses, like log cabins, churches, fire stations, general store and European houses, for some reason the nautical theme appears to be one of the most desired.

Building A Nautical Birdhouse

Unfortunately the average person does not have the talent to construct a nautical bird house. It usually will take a skilled woodworker to construct the intricate design of a lighthouse. Perhaps you have the talent or just want to give it a go then invest the time finding the right pattern and go for it. Otherwise it might be prudent to buy one already made. The main thing to be wary of when buying is to stay away from metal. The marine birdhouse like any other birdhouses should have no metal.

How To Mount A Marine Bird House

First consider the ideal placement of the nautical bird house, it should be out of reach of predators such as dogs or cats so they cannot eat the baby birds. Then in the fall, when the birds have migrated to a warmer place you have to take the house down, clean it out and store it inside. Often when a person buys a marine birdhouse that resembles a lighthouse, they will never let birds use it but rather they will consider it a decorative item for the inside of the home.

As many bird lovers have discovered, you cannot miss with the marine birdhouse theme. Beauty, uniqueness and function combined into one comes in these beautiful pieces.

Edible Landscaping: Practical and Delicious!

Posted by on March 14, 2009

More and more people are moving away from the idea of simple lawns and looking for innovative landscape ideas. They want to make their outdoor space into a more natural setting, and this can include useful, even edible plants! A lot of edible plants happen to be quite aesthetically pleasing; some vegetables and herbs also have ornamental varieties. It’s great to have your own vegetables - fuel costs are driving up the price of all food products, and produce is no exception.

If you’re interested in creating edible landscapes yourself, you’ll likely want to opt for perennials, since they will return year after year, saving you a lot of work each spring. After planting them once, these plants will give you food and something pleasing to look at for years to come.

These plants require little in the way of care; just watering, feeding, a bit of weeding, pruning and keeping any insect pests under control will be sufficient. There are plenty of perennial vegetable plants which are great choices. Remember, perennials do die back in the winter, so don’t be alarmed when your plants appear to go away in the fall - they’ll come back in the spring!

Perhaps you are a little leery of this idea - after all, doesn’t a vegetable garden require a lot of care? This is certainly the case for traditional vegetable gardens; however, edible landscapes require only a little bit more work than other landscape plants!

This is all easier than you may think. You can simply replace some elements used in traditional landscaping with edible plants. For example, plant fruit trees rather than non-fruit bearing varieties. Wouldn’t you rather have say, plums than acorns?  Many vegetables work well as ornamentals and can be planted in place of flowers and other landscape accents.

Edible plants can also be mixed in with others to create your own outdoor look. Herbs in particular look wonderful planted among other, non-edible flowering plants. You can create any look for your garden or yard that you like this way.

Sage and oregano work very well as small shrubs, especially as edging for larger shrubs. Try planting curly parsley among flowers such as lobelia, dianthus and pansies. Strawberries also work well in flower gardens.

Why not plant some leaf lettuce in beds as accents? Leaf lettuce comes in different colors and shapes - combine them for a stunning look, edged with a border of grass.

Edible flowers are also a wonderful idea. There are plants which give in more ways than one. Snap peas, for instance. Besides producing peas, they also give you the gift of beautiful pink, white and purple flowers on attractive vines.

Chives are a joy to behold with their purple flowers (edible and great in salads as well). The red and white flowers of fava beans add interest to any garden. Dill’s yellow, pleasant smelling blossoms are an attractive and fragrant addition. Salvia and sage boast blue and purple flowers which are a welcome sight and nasturtium (did you know the flowers are edible?) flowers are colorful.

Requiring little maintenance (and delicious), perennial herbs and vegetables are a fantastic idea in any landscaping. Dandelions, chives, rhubarb, sweet potatoes, ginger, asparagus, sorrel and more are all wonderful to look at and to eat as well.

Alternative Fuels Needed Now

Posted by on March 2, 2009

During the course of the last 30 years in America, the quantity of imported oil and fuel products that is needed to meet the demand has grown to more than triple. With each passing year, the United States has increased its imports of petroleum fuels to the point that the country imports in excess of twelve million barrels of crude oil on a daily basis, in an attempt to keep up with the American lifestyle that is so vehicle dependent.

The 12 million barrels of imported oil makes up a bit more than half of the 20 million barrels of crude oil that is consumed each day across the country. The vast majority of the fuels produced are used to power various types of transportation modes that rely on fossil fuel and the largest portion of transportation fuel consumption is attributed to consumers who use the gasoline to power their favorite vehicles. Unfortunately, the faster the United States increases it usage of and reliance on oil and gas, the faster the oil reserves of the planet will be depleted.

Industry experts have estimated that globally we are just a few decade away from hitting the point at which there will no longer be enough crude oil to provide the current level of demand for petroleum-based fuels. Other, alternative types of fuel will need to be developed to become the primary source for fueling vehicles. While most Americans complain and grumble about today’s high prices for gas, they still drive with little change in their daily habits, as evidenced by the fact that overall fuel consumption has not been reduced significantly in recent years, if at all.

It seems that Americans are more willing to sacrifice in other areas than they are to change their driving habits or make drastic changes in the type of transportation that they rely on to get around and get on with their daily lives. This causes those industry experts to wonder how high gasoline prices must go before people start to seriously look at renewable energy sources and alternative methods of transportation.

While there have been a few alternative fuels that have started to crop up and are bringing with them some promise, with regard to improving fuel economy through combining them with traditional gasoline or as a replacement, there still are many obstacles to widespread use and some drawbacks. The fact is that some of these fuel alternatives are simply too costly and cannot be viewed as viable alternatives, unless the price of gasoline more than doubles from the current price.

Some of the other, more cost effective fuels don’t seem to be fully capable of meeting the high expectations and demands of today’s consumers. At this stage, it appears that these alternative fuel options have not been sufficiently developed to the point where they are truly capable of being competitive, in terms of matching the availability of gasoline that American consumers are accustomed to having.

There are still many questions that linger about what the future holds, in terms of gasoline consumption and alternative fuels that will become available in the next ten to twenty years. However, with all estimates indicating that the world’s crude oil resources will be effectively depleted within 40 years, it is certain that there will be some drastic changes in how new cars are powered in the near future.

This summer gasoline prices hit record amounts. It was far too easy to spend over $100 each week on gas prices. That seriously hurts most people’s budgets. They simply cannot afford to pay those kinds of prices. With gas fluctuating up and down and no one safe from the price gouging, many people are turning to alternative fuels or learning how to rethink how they drive their vehicle. If you want to save money at the gas pump then you are going to have to do some research.

Posted by on November 29, 2008

Nikola Tesla and the Electric Universe - The Big Picture.

There was more to Nikola Tesla than a brilliant inventor, physicist and electrical engineer. He was also keenly aware of the broader implications for electromagnetism and electrodynamics.

We’re posting this excellent video in hopes of stirring wider interest in Tesla, particularly among young people.  Learning more about this brilliant man and his inventions and ideas would be a worthwhile pursuit for any young or would-be scientist.

We think there’s material here for some fascinating science fair projects, too!
